Sales Representative
A sales representative is responsible for selling their company's products.

Sales Representative

Within footwear, apparel, textile and related industries, this can take the form of a retail sales representative (selling products from a shop to members of the public), or an industry sales representative, who sells products and services onto another company.

What does a sales representative do?
For industry or technical sales representatives, a good working knowledge of your company's products and services are essential, as many purchasers may have specific requirements that they will expect you to fulfil. Sales representatives sometimes have to advise clients on the best products for their use.

Sales representatives often have a specific region or territory for which they are responsible, looking after clients within this area and seeking opportunities for new business with potential purchasers. They may have to check deliveries are made on time and that the customer is happy with the products, as well as securing the sale itself.

The salary of a sales representative
The starting salary for a sales representative may be between £15,000 and £20,000 a year. This will increase with experience to between £35,000 and £45,000 a year. Very experienced or senior sales representatives can earn in excess of £50,000 a year.

Hours and working environment
Most sales representatives work irregular hours; these will depend on the workload and any meetings with the client. Evening and weekend work may therefore be necessary. It may be possible to work part-time.

Sales representatives will be based in an office but will need to travel to factories and other offices to visit clients and production lines. A driving licence is an advantage and may be essential for some jobs. Depending on the employer, some overseas travel may be required.

Skills and interests
It may be useful for someone considering a career as a sales representative to have some of the following skills and interests:
·      good sales and negotiation skills
·      knowledge and enthusiasm for the products being sold
·      the ability to work well alone and travel
·      good literacy, numeracy and IT skills

Entry into a career as a sales representative
There are no specific entry requirements for a career in this area, although most employers look for GCSE grades A-C, or equivalent, in English and maths.

An increasing number of employers are now recruiting applicants with higher education qualifications. A HND or Degree in a subject related to sales, marketing, business, fashion or textiles would be the most relevant. For more information on degree-level courses, visit the UCAS website: www.ucas.co.uk.

Further training to develop a career as a sales representative
Most companies offer in-house training on their products, organisation and the methods used for sales. New sales representatives may be trained by a more experienced member of staff.

There are also vocational qualifications available from industry-recognised professional organisations, for example:

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) offer a range of part-time qualifications, which lead to membership status. For more information, visit the website: www.cim.co.uk/.

The Institute of Sales and Marketing Management (ISMM) also offer relevant qualifications, such as an NVQ Level 2 in sales. For more information, visit the website: www.ismm.co.uk/.

The Managing and Marketing Sales Association (MAMSA) offer certificate and diploma - level qualifications in sales marketing and sales management. For more information, visit the website: www.mamsasbp.org.uk/.

Opportunities for sales representatives
Promotion opportunities for sales representatives depend on their sales results. Progression may involve taking on responsibility for a larger area or moving into Sales Management. Some sales representatives become national account managers, working closely with one or more large organisations.

Some sales representatives may be able to move into related areas, such as product development, research and production. Some companies may also offer opportunities abroad.
