Romeo Pires : LFW Sept 2009

"Two Worlds and in Between"

Taking cues from the feminine movement at the turn of the 20th century, dynamic duo Sergio Pires and Nicholas Humphrey of Romeo Pires featured the signature flowing frocks and bold prints of their previous collections.

However, this time femininity overthrew the throne of the once crowned theme of fashion - menswear.  As if poking fun at the heavily masculine design structure of clothing during that era, Romeo Pires opened the show with a white oversized cape dress accessorised with an exaggerated black suit tie.

From that point on visions of deconstructed tailoring highlighted with mixtures of silk, organza and taffetas in vibrant prints of Venetian red, royal blue, iridescent grey, sunshine yellow and deep pink reigned supreme.

Soft details like colourful brogues, side swept hair, black body suits and neutral toned make-up emphasised the shift in empowerment by creating a juxtaposition between a masculine attitude and style toward fashion whilst allowing room for feminine subtlety, sensuality and empowerment.  Just when you think the show was turning up one too many light and airy printed flowing dresses, out came a deconstructed oversized black suit blazer (albeit fitted as a dress) adorned with ruffled sleeves to provide that ultra-feminine touch.  Simple, but deliberate.

Which leads to my conclusion of this show - A collection exploiting the paradox of an oversaturated mens stronghold on fashion during the 20th century by showcasing the sexuality and sensualness of womenswear using an eclectic fusion of vivid prints, pop culture and surrealism.  Hmmmm.... "Two Worlds and in Between". Point well taken, Romeo Pires.
