Ready for Spring?

By Petrina De Gouttes

With a spring in your step, jump into the coming season full of neutral tones, lusty lingerie and Lycra induced sportswear to name but a few. The collections of Spring/Summer 2010 were bolder than ever, clearly influenced by a year in recession. Recycled patchwork denim was seen at Chloe, while fearless warrior chic stormed the catwalk at Rodarte - it's time to hit back, be innovative and be courageous.

Sports inspired collections were seen in New York, London, Milan and Paris. From tennis at Hermes to karate at Bottega Veneta, almost every sport provided inspiration for designers this season. Known for spinning out timeless classics, Jean-Paul Gaultier's collection for Hermes did exactly that. Elegant sports inspired evening gowns walked alongside beautiful pleated skirts, showing that sportswear doesn't simply have to be about getting physical. In New York, Alexander Wang's slouchy all-American girl stepped out in oversized grey jumpers, a varsity jacket emblazoned with a capital 'A' as well as shoulder padded top, arousing connotations of America's favourite sport; football.

Prepare to bare all as underwear is to be worn as outerwear this season as numerous designers incorporated elements of lingerie into their collections. The iconic cone-bra corset was modernised at Jean-Paul Gaultier and corsets were aplenty at Dior, not to mention Henry Holland's use of lace. Merged with sportswear à la Bottega Veneta, lingerie doesn't have to be daunting, it simply needs to be classy.

At Phoebe Philo's début show for Parisian fashion house Celine, a palette of neutral colours were teamed together with leather t-shirts and military jackets representing strong and powerful minimalist fashion. The entire show was clean and sophisticated, less was more and accessories were minimal, leaving behind the complexity of the previous season. So in order to follow this S/S 2010 trend- it's time to be subtle. Beige, khaki and caramel tones are to be embedded in every wardrobe this season, be it a light trench-coat as seen at Charles Anastase or chinos at Stella McCartney, these are the colours of the season.
