Fabric Trends - Spring Summer 2010

Fabric Trend from Premiere Vision Spring 2010.

And what an inspiring trip it was…The fabric trends for spring 2010 reflect the current mood whilst projecting optimism through fabric innovation, print and colour.

The overall feeling was that aware as we are of the uncertainties we are all currently facing, it is important to keep an upbeat tempo in fabrics and style and not to reflect the economy by dressing in a completely morose fashion, The fabric trends reflected this perfectly by offering a seriousness and a light heartedness at the same time.

The seriousness was reflected in tailored clean cut fabrics. There was a real return to suiting fabrics. The fabrics were grown up often teamed with subtle masculine stripes. Crepe yarns appeared in every shape or form, and weaves were always interesting and often 3 dimensional.

In contrast to the seriousness and masculinity, fabrics were counterbalanced by soft feminine fabrics such as floaty chiffons and laces in a powdery colour palette.

Natural fabrics such as cotton linen and silk took their place at the forefront. Handcrafted looks were important reflecting the new current trend in producing one’s own clothes and leading more casual and less glamorous lifestyles.

On the casual front, ginghams and fun stripes in candy colours to detract from the sombreness on dark dismal suiting’s made a strong statement bringing an element of fun.

The washed look continues on from Autumn 09, fabrics looking like they have been boiled to give a vintage look. Jacquards have lost their oversized weaves to emerge as fine subtle geometrics. Fabrics in general seem to have lost their brashness, the metallic’s of past seasons only appearing discreetly as a highlight.

As for colours, there was still plenty of neutrals which work as great basics, as well as delicate tones of pastels such as soft greens, lavenders, lilacs and several different shades of pink. White is going to be predominant especially as it signifies hope. Colour is determined to push through the bleakness of all over black. Black is mixed with white to give clean looking prints and woven’s.
Stronger shades included citrus, (coming through from this summer) brick, coral rose pink and ink.

The fabric trends for spring 10 encompassed a balance of seriousness and light heartedness that reflect the difficult times we are facing whilst reflecting optimism and hope for the future.
