If you are a designer working with freelancers and you don’t think you need a contract of employment then think again!
As a young designer or new business start up you need to be aware of your rights and how to protect yourself and this is why areas such as Employment Law are vital for you to understand. As a Business Support Organisation we are here to help you and we want to ensure you have the means to receive that all important support and advice to help you and your business succeed today. We are delighted to be working with Irenicon - a long established business offering employment law and employee relations support to clients throughout the UK.

What is KoffeeKlatch? Fashion Capital caught up with Managing Director of Irenicon Annabel Kaye….
KoffeeKlatch is a new way of delivering the Irenicon service. For some time now we have been aware (and particularly through the recession) that many people need our advice and frankly can’t afford it. Whilst we know free advice is available to businesses, much of it is compliance oriented and is not much use to someone trying to run a business through difficult times. ![]() Our KoffeeKlatch service is designed to provide downloads and live advice where business people can sit down at their own desk or in their kitchen with a cup of coffee and talk to people who can really help them solve their problems, without paying the cost of one to one consultations. These are available of course as a top up when needed. The tone is practical but informal - no lawyer speak, No you must do, just useful ways of deciding what suits your business best. In a world where so many things demand our attention, it is helpful to sit down and talk to practical people who can work through what really matters (and what can wait). Our first free download is aimed at businesses who think employment law has nothing to do with them since they don't have any staff. Nothing could be further from the truth since employment law covers workers as well as employees. For designers and creative artists of all kinds, there are also issues about who has copyright. If you employ someone to produce something the copyright is yours, but if they are free-lance or sub contracts - the copyright is theirs (unless you sort it out). This is just one example of the things we need to think about when setting up arrangements for people to help in our business. Individuals who download the free podcast and post questions will receive follow up FAQs. We can also organise (once the FAQs are in) a free introductory KoffeeKlatch for Fashion Capital subscribers only if that is something of interest. This is a dial in group chat dealing with the questions subscribers have raised - what bugs them, puzzles them, hurts them, stops them doing what they want to do - and how to figure a way round or through them. This is employment law, but made with real coffee for real people - even those who prefer tea. To download the FREE podcast please visit www.koffeeklatch.co.uk |
