Fashion is often associated with fantasy, whereas architecture tends to be associated with functionalism.

In Nicole Farhi’s Autumn/Winter 2010 collection we see her borrow elements from the discipline as she experiments with structure and form. The result; simplification, functionism, practicality and a minimal aesthetic- the precise elements that make it a sell out collection!

Farhi’s sobriety and respect to clean and sharp lines provoke a form of elegance. Midi dresses hung of the body and accentuated curves without being too fitted. Raglan sleeves and boat necks prevailed throughout allowing for comfort and practicality.

This visually simple collection is deceptive of the underlying complexity in construction. Asymmetrically draped dresses manipulated with twists and tucks and softly tailored trench coats and pants perfectly sculpted to create an effortless effect.

The limited colour palette of black, camel and nudes simulated architectural aesthetics and allowed focus to be directed at the form and shape of the clothes. Bursts of red, and 19th century antique rose prints were in contrast of the modern shapes and brought back a sense of femininity and youth.

Farhi’s choice of materials encapsulated the ephemeral side of fashion as well as the monumental and rigid architectural elements. Soft and fluid silk crepes and sheer delicately star beaded tulles alongside highly durable heavy wools and patent leathers.

The creative aspects of architecture and fashion have influenced the work of Nicole Farhi resulting in truly elegant forms of perfect balance and proportion making this collection pure and free from non-essentials. Truly innovative and timeless.
