What is International Fashion Fusion?
South Africa Fashion Week with the Department of Arts & Culture, Asos.com and Haringey Council initiated a groundbreaking exchange program between leading fashion designers and traditional crafters. The aim was to reinforce a unique design aesthetic that would excite local consumers and generate international interest in South African fashion. Equally the vision was to provide urban designers with the opportunity to draw inspiration from their wider environment while boosting the revenue potential of the outlying crafting community.

The Competition Details:
The competition winner will participate in a collaborative design project with ASOS, Jessica Ogden, The South African Government and Haringey Council. The project will see fashion designer Jessica Ogden design a capsule collection which will utilise the beading skills of the "Rainbow People" of the Soweta area of South Africa. Jessica Ogden has long been renowned for her work with traditional craft techniques and the incorporation of hand made features. Applicants will be asked to provide evidence of extensive research into Sikhula beading and design a garment that would incorporate the bead work. It is also expected that an understanding of Jessica Ogden's work be demonstrated in the final designs. Up to three sketches may be submitted and one design will be will be selected and will be incorporated and produced as part of the capsule collection. The winner will also be given a six month placement at ASOS, with the specific remit of working with Jessica Ogden on the realisation of the project.
‘We will be looking for innovative designers to create a selection of brand new garments that uses the beading and embellishments from the crafters in the townships. This project is for anyone with a sense of fashion and is a national first for all concerned.'

The garment…
I think this garment will work well in relation to Jessica Ogden’s collection as well as with Asos.com because it combines the ergonomic side with the aesthetic side, while maintaining a South Africa influence. The target market I am aiming at with this style are between 16-34 year olds who appreciate comfort but also have a feminine sense of style. My design could also be marketed cross culturally due to the South Africa influence in combination with a style catering for a more western culture “As Seen on Screen’. The light-weight natural fabrics offer comfortable as the bows, beading and scalloped trim offer a feminine feel. I chose the romper as I feel it is high on trend this summer and would fit well with in any line.
Why I want to work with Asos.com…
Personally I feel and opportunity to work with Asos.com would be beneficial to offer me experience within the fashion industry so I can really understand how it works. I also am excited to have the opportunity to see where the innovative ideas come from when designers create fabulous outfits for the Asos.com customer. Since I am at the beginning of my career, fresh out of school, this work placement would help me jump start my future while allowing me to make important connections.

Tanya's final entry.
A little on Jessica…
My garment is strongly influenced by Jessica Ogden and her innovative way of styling. I have incorporated her signature by using layers, a combination of different fabrics and interesting stitching details in my romper. I also took in to consideration Jessica’s sustainability by working with natural fiber fabrics which are comfortable and natural for spring summer season.

A little about me…
I'm 25 years old and live in Brighton. I studied Multimedia Textile Design at Loughborough University achieving a high 2:1. Since leaving University, a year and a half a go, I have been freelancing for many different companies giving me a wide variety of skills. These have included a women’s fashion design agency, a bridal designer, a home furnishings textile company and a children's wear designer. Ultimately I would love to run my own business, either a fashion design agency or a home furnishings brand but until then I want to get as much experience as I can in as many different areas as I can.

Why I want a placement at Asos.com…
Working for Asos.com would offer me a great introduction to working in the industry. I would love to sit with the designers and learn how they process fashion trends into high street designs. Having Asos.com and Jessica Ogden on my CV will definitely jump start my career while I feel I have the work ethic and skills to add a little something to their companies as well.
