Getting your products published by magazines 1 Year, 12 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi
I'm thinking of starting an site to sell jewellery on the internet. How do I get fashion magazines to use my jewellery in their editorials? I can't afford to hire a pr company so do I send the stock directly to the mags? Who in the magazines? The fashion editors?

Hi!

It's a tricky subject to explain but I'll give it a go.

Firstly you need a press release. I'd advise getting someone with experience to write and design one these for you. Look online for tips on how to write them if not. I won't go into how to write/design a release, it's complicated and the rest of the internet will explain it better than I could.

You need product photography. Some magazines if they really like your products will reshoot them. However, journalists are lazy, you need to make this as easy for them as possible. Get your products photographed on models and on a simple white background. (Look at Gumtree, you can probably find a photographer willing to do it in exchange for jewellery.)

Once you've got a release and some hi and low-res images you can start contacting magazines.

You have a few options.
Call them - If you look in the front of your favourite fashion mags it'll have a list of names of the writers, editors etc. Somewhere on those pages is usually a number too. If you can't find the correct number then the swtichboard is the next best bet.

Call someone in charge of fashion (not always the editor, they are busy) if the person you call can't help they can pass you on to the right person. Talk about your product and offer to send them something. Make sure you take down their number and email address. Send product along with press release.

Follow up in a week or so and ask if the received it and if they need hi-res images.

Email first - Generally if you email you won't get a reply. You must follow up with a phone call. If you have limited sample stock this might be the best way then you can ask if they were interested in the product they read about in your email. If yes then offer a sample.

Just send - You can always send samples and then follow up with an email or call.

There's a lot to think about and take into account. I'm happy to give you a bit of a hand with brand building/PR/marketing if you need it. I've been doing this for a while and am more than happy to pass on what I've learned!

Drop me an email if you like, jess@feelingstylish.co.uk

Hope that helps!

Hi remember Jenni Sutton who is the editor of fashioncapital.co.uk runs the Dispensary Service which creates purpose made press releases for you. We employ a copy writer called Beth that professionally creates the release by you providing an overview of your colleciton and key words for the release. WE then send out the release to our up to date list of majojr journalists and editors.

Jenni has had some good results. If you want to email and discuss this with her her email address is jenni@fashion-enter.com

Jess great response - thank you.

regards

Jenny
