Fashion in the recession – opinions please….

I am a final year Fashion Design student writing my dissertation on how the fashion industry has been affected by the recession and what the future holds.

Opinions welcomed from everyone… designers, buyers, suppliers, retailers and consumers ….

- How you have been affected by the recession?

- How do you intend to buy/spend now we are exiting the recession?

My income hasn't been affected by the recession, but I do find myself shopping more carefully...opting to buy better quality or key pieces I will get lots of wear out of.
I think when the recession is over those who have been badly affected will be wary of overspending like before the recession but people who are only aware not affected will shop as they please.

-also meant to say, I have noticed the UK highstreets are very quiet at the moment - not sure what other people think?
people seem to be buying less even though the news is saying we are out of the recession?

The recession is not over. The government takes action to keep the interest rates down. Some people are really scared about the elections if the Conservatives win - the interest will go up again.
Everyone who pays a mortgage has been affected by the interest rate increases a few years ago.


Those that had a job in retail or design have lost their job due the recession. Employees with medium and high salaries are out of market or have moved to hospitality sector.

Graduate Fashion designers have not got a job.

I buy quality products and essential products.
While the recession is not over I am organizing my label for the near future.

Hi we are finding trade slower and customers more discerning about qulaity too. AT fashioncapital we have a Showroom operation whereby we are selling to asos.com, Topshop and John Lewis but its just hard going. Decisions are slow to be made generally with designers and also the buyers and at the beginning of January we predicted a double dip with the recession.

It will be tough until April when Easter comes along with the sunshine and that makes people perpensity to buy higher.

Our boutiques are still selling, we dont discount but customers are taking their time over making decisions. We have had more people put on deposits rather than straight buys.
